Why Your Sofa Needs Deep Cleaning

Why Your Sofa Needs Deep Cleaning

A sofa absorbs years of everyday life — spills, dust, pet hair, and the general odour that builds up gradually enough that a household stops noticing it. Most people only think about cleaning it once a stain is already visible, but by that point there's usually a lot more going on beneath the surface than one mark.

What’s Actually Living In There

Upholstery fabric traps dust mites, skin flakes, pet dander and airborne allergens in a way that hard surfaces simply don't — the fibres give all of it somewhere to settle and stay. Add in whatever's been spilled over the years, and a sofa that looks fine on the surface can be holding a surprising amount of embedded soil and allergen buildup that a normal vacuum pass never reaches.

Why A Wipe-Down Or Home Vacuum Isn’t Enough

A vacuum or a damp cloth only lifts what's sitting on top of the fabric. Dust mites and ground-in soil settle down into the weave itself, below where surface cleaning can reach, which is why upholstery can look "clean" while still holding onto the dust and odour that's actually causing allergy symptoms or a musty smell in the room.

How Deep Extraction Actually Works

Deep extraction injects hot water and a cleaning agent into the fabric under pressure, then immediately pulls it back out along with whatever it's lifted — reaching into the fibre itself rather than just refreshing the surface. Leather is treated completely differently: a harsh extraction process would strip its natural oils and dry it out, so leather gets a pH-balanced cleaner followed by a conditioning treatment that keeps it supple instead.

Signs It’s Overdue

Visible shine or matting on the armrests and cushion edges, a smell that's noticeable to visitors but not to the household anymore, allergy symptoms that ease up when you're away from home, or simply not remembering the last time it was properly cleaned are all signs it's due. As a rough guide, most households get real value from a deep clean every 6 to 12 months.
