How To Get Rid Of Bedbugs For Good

How To Get Rid Of Bedbugs For Good

Most bedbug treatments in Nairobi fail for one specific reason: only the mattress gets sprayed. The eggs sitting in the bed frame seams, the electrical socket covers and the skirting board hatch a week or two later, and the problem is back before you've even finished telling people it's gone. A proper job means treating the whole room, not just the bed, and returning after roughly two weeks to catch the new hatch before it breeds again.

Why Spraying Just The Mattress Doesn’t Work

Bedbugs don't live exclusively on the mattress — they shelter in any tight gap near where people sleep: bed frame joints, headboard seams, skirting boards, behind loose picture frames, and inside electrical socket covers on the wall nearest the bed. A female bedbug lays eggs in batches, tucked into whichever of these gaps is closest, and those eggs are unaffected by a treatment that only touches the mattress surface.

Eggs typically hatch within one to two weeks. If the only thing treated was the bed itself, the room looks "sorted" for exactly that long before the next generation starts biting — which is the entire reason DIY sprays and one-off treatments earn bedbugs their reputation for "always coming back".

What A Proper Treatment Actually Covers

A treatment that's actually going to work covers the bed frame and every joint in it, the mattress itself, skirting boards around the whole room, behind any furniture within a couple of metres of the bed, and a check behind wall fixtures and socket covers nearby. If there's any sign of spread — bites happening in a second room, or activity noticed near a wardrobe — that gets checked and treated too, rather than assuming it's contained to one bed.

The goal is covering every place an egg could realistically have been laid, not just the obvious one. That's the difference between a treatment that holds and one that needs redoing a month later.

How To Prepare Your Room Before We Arrive

A bit of preparation makes a real difference to how thorough the treatment can be on the day. Strip all bedding and any clothing that's been in the room and wash it on the hottest cycle the fabric allows — heat above roughly 60°C kills bedbugs and their eggs. Vacuum the mattress, bed frame and surrounding floor thoroughly, then empty the vacuum straight into an outdoor bin rather than leaving the bag sitting in the house.

Pull the bed and any nearby furniture a few inches away from the walls so every side is reachable, and clear anything stored under the bed. Items you're not able to wash — books, electronics, shoes — can be sealed in plastic bags for a couple of weeks, since bedbugs can't survive long without a blood meal in an airtight environment.

The 14-Day Follow-Up, And Why Skipping It Undoes Everything

We come back roughly two weeks after the first treatment specifically to catch anything that's hatched since. This second visit is what actually breaks the cycle — it's included in the original quote, not offered afterward as an upsell. Skipping it is the single most common reason a "treated" room has bedbugs again within a month: the first visit did its job on the population that existed at the time, and the follow-up is what catches everything that hadn't hatched yet.
